Released in 2011, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is more than a decade-long game that been a fan-favorite since the beginning. Even the more graphically improved version, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition is one of the most loved PC games of all time. There are some mods that take Skyrim’s graphics to the next level, such as the Static Mesh Improvement Mod (SMIM). However, the Skyrim Realistic Overhaul mod by the modder Ancient is one of the best custom texture mods in Skyrim.
Skyrim Realistic Overhaul is one of the most popular overhaul mods that improves the game’s graphics to make them appear more realistic and immersive. Read on to learn more about this amazing mod, what it does, how to download and install it, and why it’s totally worth it.
What Is the Skyrim Realistic Overhaul Mod?
Have you ever wished there was a new DLC for Skyrim that overhauled its appearance to make it more realistic? Well, your prayers have been answered, my friend! Although not a DLC, Skyrim Realistic Overhaul is one of my favourite mods for Skyrim which adds a big fat texture pack with high resolutions and exciting features.
Although the mod has been around for many years now, it has been updated periodically to keep up. But don’t get me wrong. This is not an ordinary mod. In fact, this 10GB mod is actually bigger than many PC games. What’s more, it massively improves the quality of the game’s visuals in 4096k and 2048k textures. However, these improvements don’t alter the artistic results of the original assets in the game. So you don’t need to worry about this mod making unrealistic changes to the game.
Latest Version (1.8)
Available for both Skyrim and Skyrim Special Edition, this mod has managed to leave all the graphics overhaul mods behind. The latest version of the mod, version 1.8 brings all new improvements in textures for Whiterun, Riften, Landscape, Markarth, Roads, Imperial Dungeons, Farmhouse, Solitude, Redoran, and Bulwark.
These changes include both new and improved textures for road and the general landscape to the main cities and places. Read on to learn more about the main features of this mod that bring nice visual touches to the game.

To install Skyrim Realistic Overhaul mod on your PC and get higher quality textures for Oldrim and the Special Edition of Skyrim, you will first need to download and install version 1.7 of the original version mod and then download the version 1.8 patch, which is 500MBs. You can find the Oldrim and SSE variant of the mod here for both versions.
Follow the steps below to install Skyrim Realistic Overhaul mod
Download all the three parts of the Skyrim Realistic Overhaul mod version 1.7.
Once downloaded, you will need to extract their data folders in the Skyrim installation and overwrite them. Once done, you will now have a subfolder named “textures”. You may not need to overwrite anything as there may not be a “textures” folder before you copy and paste the data folder.
Now launch Skyrim from Steam and you will notice that the graphics of the game have been overhauled significantly.
Note: If the mod does not work, make sure to place the Skyrim Realistic Overhaul mod at the end of the Mod Organizer.

Compatability
The Realistic Overhaul mod is one of the biggest Skyrim mods. Therefore, it is compatible with nearly every other mod in Skyrim, with the exception of texture replacement mods. However, for best results, make sure to install this mod first before any other mods.
Requirements
The mod comes with more than 1500 new textures, many of which are in 4096k resolution. Therefore, you will need a good graphic card for this mod to work its best. You should at least have a graphics card with a video memory of 3GB. It is also recommended to disable the snow shader in Skyrim to make sure that the mod textures do not look bad because of it.
So that’s all, folks! This pretty much sums up everything you need to know about the Skyrim Realistic Overhaul mod. If you are done with the artistic look of original textures in vanilla Skyrim and are looking for updated textures, this is the first and last visual overhaul you will need for Skyrim and Skyrim SE. This mod lets you transform the in-game graphics to the next level.
